Amputee Aid was inspired by a simple conversation between two amputees in a shared car ride.
The founder of Amputee Aid found himself in the backseat of an Uber during a work trip to a foreign city. He noticed his driver’s makeshift steering wheel and shifter, which would allow him to drive with one leg, along with a set of crutches in the front seat, and started up a conversation with him about their shared experiences as amputees. In this conversation, he learned that his driver had lost his job when his prosthetic leg no longer fit him, and it was too painful to continue. This was how he became an Uber Driver— it was the only job he could physically work without a proper leg.
When the ride was over, he left the Uber and said his goodbyes, but it got him thinking. Prosthetics and all necessary care items for them can cost upwards of $50,000, and even if someone can afford the initial cost of their prosthetic care, they may not be able to afford ongoing support. The cost just keeps growing.
Though he had the means to maintain his prosthetic care and keep working, he knew that many amputees could not, which is why he founded Amputee Aid: so that those who could not afford prosthetic care and were unable to work could once again live their lives to the absolute fullest.
